Fix Berkeley’s Streets & Sidewalks!

Our measure wil do just that!

Berkeley deserves better streets and sidewalks!

As Berkeleyans experience every day, over 40% of our streets are officially in poor to failed condition—especially dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. Even with the City Council’s recent increase in funding for street maintenance, the overall condition of our streets will continue to decline, and the $260 million current backlog of deferred maintenance will grow by about 25% over the next five years.  Likewise, our sidewalks and pedestrian paths are crumbling and hazardous.

But, together, we can change that!

We’ve collected enough signatures to qualify for the November 2024 ballot!

On May 7, we announced that over 80 Berkeley volunteers collected enough signatures to qualify our measure for the ballot! The measure is narrowly focused on fixing all our streets and sidewalks over the next 12 years – with no padding for undefined and unplanned infrastructure projects. The proposed measure requires the city to maintain its recently increased street maintenance budget—otherwise, the tax goes away (no bait and switch)!

Now the campaign begins!

Working together, ordinary folks have the power to make our city government more responsible and more responsive to Berkeley’s basic needs.  You can help ensure that our measure prevails in November!

Testimonials

“It’s a real hazard”

Every time I walk on my street, I have to be extra careful not to twist an ankle – the pavement is so rough, it’s a real hazard.

— Louis B

“These roads are costing us”

The road I have to drive daily is so bad, I needed a very expensive repair on my car’s suspension.

— Jane G

“Letting roads fail doesn’t make sense”

Letting roads fail doesn’t make sense economically. In the long term, it costs the city much more to rebuild failed roads than to maintain them.

— Evan M
